The Short Version

The champ
#5 Forever Young (2-1). Won this race last year at Del Mar and has been on the board in all six of his recent starts.
The main rivals
#2 Sovereignty (5-2) and #7 Knightsbridge (9-2), both trained by William Mott and both coming off Grade 1 wins.
The pace
Magnitude, Knightsbridge and Napoleon Solo all like to be up front. Forever Young should be sitting right behind them, ready to pounce.
The 3-year-olds
#3 Golden Tempo won the Derby and the Belmont. #8 Napoleon Solo won the Preakness. #4 The Puma won the Pennsylvania Derby.

The Breeders' Cup Classic closes out Saturday at Keeneland: a mile and a quarter on the dirt for a $7,000,000 purse, with a field of eight. Small field, but there isn't a soft spot in it: seven of the eight have won or placed in a Grade 1 in the last year, and the eighth, T O Password, ships in from Japan off a solid summer.

The story is simple. Forever Young won this race last year, and he comes back off a win in the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont. The question is whether the American older horses, led by Sovereignty and Knightsbridge, or one of the top 3-year-olds can finally run him down. Here's how I see the field.

#5 · 2-1 favoriteForever Young

Record16: 12-1-3Earnings$32.3 millionLast startWon at Belmont, Sep 18SireReal Steel*JpnMorning line2-1

Forever Young is the horse everyone has to beat, and he has earned it. He won the Classic last year at Del Mar, won the Saudi Cup in February, ran 2nd in the Dubai World Cup beaten a length, and then came to Belmont in September and won the Jockey Club Gold Cup. He has won 12 of his 16 career starts and has never been far away.

He doesn't need the lead. His best races come from pressing the pace and pouncing when the leaders start to tire, and he has already won at this distance more than once. Yoshito Yahagi trains him and R. Sakai rides. That style fits this race well: there's plenty of speed in front of him, and he should be sitting in the perfect spot. The only real question is whether anyone can keep up with him once he moves.

#2 · 5-2Sovereignty

Record12: 7-3-1Earnings$6.9 millionLast startWon at Saratoga, Aug 8SireInto MischiefMorning line5-2

Sovereignty is the best American older horse in the race. He won the Travers last year, and this summer he put it together again with a win in the Whitney at Saratoga. Before that he ran 3rd in the Stephen Foster and 2nd in the Oaklawn Handicap, so he has been in the money in all six of his recent starts.

His Whitney was a big step forward, and the software has him with the second-best recent figures in this field. He's a stalker rather than a need-the-lead type, which matters a lot here. If the speed horses go at it early, he's the one sitting in the right spot. He returns from about three months off, and William Mott has a strong record with last-out winners. J. Alvarado rides from post 2.

#7 · 9-2Knightsbridge

Record12: 8-2-1Earnings$1.5 millionLast startWon at Del Mar, Aug 22SireNyquistMorning line9-2

Knightsbridge is Mott's other big shot, and he might be the most interesting horse in the race. He won the Pacific Classic at Del Mar in August going this same mile and a quarter, and before that he won the Monmouth Cup. Earlier in the year he was running in one-turn races, including a 2nd in the Metropolitan Handicap, and the stretch-out has suited him.

He's narrowly the fastest horse in the field on recent figures. The catch is his style. He wants to be on the lead, and so does Magnitude. L. Saez will have a decision to make out of the gate from post 7.

#3 · 5-1Golden Tempo

Record7: 4-0-3Earnings$4.8 millionLast start3rd at Saratoga, Aug 29SireCurlinMorning line5-1

Golden Tempo won the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes this year, both at a mile and a quarter, then ran 3rd in the Travers beaten about two lengths. That's three straight big efforts at this distance, and he has finished in the top three in every start of his career.

He's a late runner, and on paper this is the pace he needs: a contested early pace and a long Keeneland stretch to run at the leaders. The question is class. This is his first try against older horses, and Forever Young and Sovereignty are a different level from what he has faced. He returns from about two months off for Cherie DeVaux, and J. Ortiz rides.

#6 · 6-1Magnitude

Record15: 8-2-1Earnings$9.6 millionLast start6th at Saratoga, Aug 8SireNot This TimeMorning line6-1

Magnitude is the forgotten horse. He beat Forever Young in the Dubai World Cup in March, then won the Stephen Foster at Churchill in June. His last race is the problem: 6th in the Whitney, beaten more than 15 lengths. If you throw that one out, he has the best win this year of anybody in the field.

He's a true speed horse who does his best running on the lead, and that's the key to him on Saturday. If F. Prat gets him away clean and controls the pace, he's dangerous. If Knightsbridge and Napoleon Solo go with him, it gets much harder. He has worked sharply since that Whitney, and Steve Asmussen trains him. At 6-1, he's a big price for a horse who has already beaten the favorite.

#8 · 15-1Napoleon Solo

Record7: 3-2-0Earnings$2.0 millionLast start2nd at Saratoga, Aug 29SireLiam's MapMorning line15-1

Napoleon Solo won the Preakness, then ran 2nd in both the Haskell and the Travers, beaten half a length each time. He has improved in each of his last three starts and has run well at this distance. He's another one who likes to be up front, and from the outside post John Velazquez will have to decide how hard to use him early. If the speed holds up better than expected, he's the price that could hang around.

Race shapeHow the Race Sets Up

This is where the race gets decided. Magnitude does his best on the lead, Knightsbridge wants to be there too, and Napoleon Solo likes to be up front from the outside post. If two or three of them go at it early, a mile and a quarter is a long way to keep it up.

That sets up for the horses who can sit and wait. Forever Young should be pressing right behind the leaders, which is exactly where he likes to be, with Sovereignty stalking nearby and Golden Tempo closing from farther back. The one way the shape turns against them is if Magnitude gets loose on an easy lead and nobody goes with him.

Forever Young is the most accomplished horse in the race and a deserving favorite, and the likely pace suits his press-and-pounce style. At 2-1, though, the betting decision isn't as simple as it looks. Sovereignty, Golden Tempo and a loose-on-the-lead Magnitude all have a real case, and how the pace unfolds changes which of them makes the most sense.
