The Short Version
- The favorite
- #10 Emphatic (9-5). Three for three, including the Alcibiades over this track, and clearly the fastest filly on recent figures.
- The West Coast threat
- #5 Miss Monica (5-2). Two for two for Bob Baffert, including the Del Mar Debutante.
- The pace
- Emphatic, Miss Monica and Life Changing all want the lead. It should be contested.
- The closer
- #2 Domain Expansion (6-1). Won the Oak Leaf at Santa Anita last time and should get the pace she needs.
Friday's top race at Keeneland is the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies: a mile and a sixteenth on the dirt for 2-year-old fillies, with a $2,000,000 purse and 12 in the gate. It's the race that usually tells us who the early favorites are for next spring's Kentucky Oaks.
Three of these fillies are still unbeaten: Emphatic, Miss Monica and Manuka Honey. Two of them like to be on the lead, and that's the whole puzzle. Here's how I see the contenders.

#10 · 9-5 favoriteEmphatic
Emphatic has done everything right. She won her debut at Canterbury, won a stakes at Monmouth, and then won the Alcibiades here at Keeneland on October 2 at this exact distance. She has improved in each of her three starts, and the software has her clearly the fastest filly in the field on recent figures.
Brendan Walsh trains her and T. Gaffalione rides. She already knows the track and the trip, which is a big edge over the shippers. The concern is the setup: she has won on the lead, and she'll have company early from the outside post.
#5 · 5-2Miss Monica
Miss Monica is Bob Baffert's filly, and she's two for two. She won her debut at Del Mar in August and then won the Del Mar Debutante, a Grade 1 at seven furlongs, in September. She has trained very well since, and F. Prat makes this a top-flight team.
Two things to think about: she has never run farther than seven furlongs, and she's a need-the-lead type in a race with other speed. If she breaks well from the middle of the gate and gets loose, she can be very tough. If she has to fight Emphatic for it, both of them could be vulnerable late.
#8 · 10-1Manuka Honey
Manuka Honey is the third unbeaten filly, and she's a fair price at 10-1. She won her debut at Churchill, won a stakes at Ellis Park, and then won the Pocahontas at Churchill in September at a mile. She has improved each time out.
Brian Lynch trains her and has a strong record with last-out winners, and L. Saez rides. She sits just off the pace, so she doesn't need the lead to win. That might be exactly the right style for this race.
#2 · 6-1Domain Expansion
Domain Expansion has only run twice, but her last race was a big step forward. After a 2nd on the turf at Del Mar first time out, she switched to dirt and won the Oak Leaf at Santa Anita at a mile and a sixteenth, the same trip as Friday. The software has her with the second-best recent figures in the field.
She's a late runner, and this is the pace setup she wants. From post 2, A. Escobedo can save ground and wait for the leaders to come back. Of the closers in here, she's the one I'd take most seriously.
#4 · 15-1Rum Twist
Rum Twist ran 2nd in the Frizette at Belmont last time, beaten under three lengths, after breaking her maiden at Saratoga. She has been on the board in three of her four starts, she has trained well, and John Velazquez rides. She sits just off the pace, and at 15-1 she's a filly to use underneath.
#11 · 12-1Voyager
Voyager won the Natalma, a Grade 1 on the turf at Woodbine, last time out and has been on the board in all four of her starts. Her two wins came on turf, but she ran 2nd twice on dirt early in her career. Mark Casse trains her and J. Castellano rides. She's the wild card: if she handles the dirt as well as the grass, she has the class to be right there.
Race shapeHow the Race Sets Up
Emphatic, Miss Monica and Life Changing all want to be on the lead, and Emphatic and Life Changing are drawn outside. Two-year-olds don't rate well when they're fighting for position, and a mile and a sixteenth is a long way to go after a fast early fight.
That sets up for the fillies sitting just off them, like Manuka Honey and Rum Twist, and for a true closer like Domain Expansion. If Miss Monica breaks sharply and the others let her go, though, she could be the one who gets away with it.

Emphatic is the fastest filly in the race and already has a Grade 1 win over this track, so she's a fair favorite. But with three speed horses in the field, this isn't a race to bet blindly at a short price. Miss Monica, Manuka Honey and Domain Expansion all have a real shot, depending on how the pace plays out.
